Cecil Mamiit and Treat Huey Lead RP Team in Davis Cup 2011 First Round Against Japan

Cecil Mamiit and Treat Huey lead the Philippine delegation in the first round of Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group 1 against visitors Japan. The face off will be held in Plantation Bay, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on March 4-6, 2011.

Japan ranked 28th in the world will be considered as the favorite for this tie against 35th ranked Philippines. But with the help of the cheers from the crowd Team RP will have extra energy and motivation to win. The winning team will face the winner between New Zealand and Uzbekistan in the second round.

The last time the two teams have met was in March 7, 2010, also in the first round, where host Japan defeated team RP 5-0.

Asia/Oceania Group 1 also include teams from Australia, New Zealand, Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, and China, PR.

Philippines hosts Japan in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I first round in 2011. The two nations have met on 26 previous occasions, with Japan holding a 17-9 edge.

Philippines avoided relegation after an extraordinary away victory over Korea in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I second round play-offs. The visitors trailed 0-2 after the opening day, but fought back strongly to win 3-2. It was just the second time that Philippines had successfully come back from 0-2 down.

You might have missed the Australian Open 2011 men's final between Serb Novak Djokovic and Scot Andy Murray so I'm posting their match highlights.

After their highly contested first set, Novak came away very strong in the second and third set to capture his second Australian Open in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

Andy Murray is now 0-3 in the grand slam finals. He lost to Roger Federer in his first US Open final.He lost again to Roger Federer at the Australian Open, last year. And this time he was beaten by Novak Djokovic. It looks like, he may need to wait for few months to win his first major title.

Wilmar Declared as the First Champion of Toro Hills Championships 2011 Singles 3.0-3.5 Category

Wilmar emerged as the new champion for Toro Hills Championships 3.0-3.5 singles category.Touted as the tournament favorite, proved his reputation by downing all his opponents in dominant fashion before experiencing a hiccup in the quarterfinals. In the second round he defeated Arnel Lee 6-1. But the in quarterfinals, he was trailing 0-3, against big serving Kim Molo. As their match went on, he settled down and won six consecutive games to defeat his conqueror 6-3. Then he almost blanked Jacs Sampayan in semis, and finished the match 8-1. Jacs, was simply overpowered as Wilmar dictated most of the points during the rallies. He then faced and defeated Knubs Delfin in the finals with a score of 10-4.

Knubil advanced in the finals by dominating King Paynor 8-3 in semis. Prior to Knubs semi-final match, he turned his quarterfinal match around against compatriot Ron Sequerra. Knubs saved two match points, thanks to his wonderfully crafted backhand that caught Ron off guard. Their match went on to a tie break and Knubs eventually won the match 7-6(7-3) as Ron succumbed to fatigue and Knub’s defensive strategies.

King’s exploits to semis, was also dramatic. In the second round, he was up 5-1, and held few match points but he let his lead slip away, as Bob tied the score at 5-5. He held his serve to go up at 6-5, but Bob refused to be broken and evened the match at 6-6. The match went to a tie break but found himself trailing again at 2-4, before the match was stopped due to rain. After the rain delay, they continued the match and pulled away. He won his match 7-6 (7-5) and advanced to the quarterfinals. He then defeated Rafa Ren 7-5 to advance in the semifinals where he was defeated by Knubil. Later, King admitted that he was too nervous during the match that he almost could not move his legs.

Other participants include, Arnel Lee who blanked Masaki, 6-0 in first round. Adrian Lacson was defeated by Dennis 6-2. Unfortunately, Dennis lost to Kim Molo 6-4. Greg Malapote was defeated by Paul Jael 5-7. And Paul Jael was defeated by Jacs Sampayan 6-3. The match between JC and Almyr was also close, JC defeated him 6-4. JC lost to Carlo Amistoso in the second round with a score of 6-7(2-7) while Carlo was defeated by Jacs in the quarters with 6-4 demolition.

In the other side of the draw, Aldrin Enrile defeated Jeph in the first round 7-5.Unfortunately, Aldrin was defeated by Ron 1-6, in the second round. Meng defeated Vito to advance in the second round with 6-3 score, but eventually lost to Knubil 3-6. Commander Ian was defeated by King Paynor 6-2 in the first round. And lastly, Tony Lacson was defeated by Fredcas 4-6, to advance in the second where he was defeated by Rafa Ren, 6-3.

During the finals, Knubs Delfin gave a gallant fight but the match was all going for Wilmar. Wilmar converted his third match point with a heavy spin serve that Knubil could not put into play and ended the match at 10-4. Wilmar was awarded with the Champion's Trophy and a prize from Global Green Life while Knubs settled for a runner-up trophy.

The search for the most popular tennis player of Toro Hills Championships 2011 is on. The tournament will take place in Toro Hills Club, Brgy. Toro, Project 8, Quezon City on January 29-30, 2011. The pictures from the photographers will be posted online on January 31, 2011, and the voting will start on the same day.

The online voting contest are sponsored by the following: Global Green Life, KR Light Photography and Big Barks Productions.

The tennis player who will get the most number of votes from fans will win a fashion shoot with KR Light Photography. He will also star in a video teaser for Philippine Tennis League by Big Barks Productions.

Contest Mechanics:

1. The contest is open for all participants of Toro Hills Championships 2011, "Going twice".
2. KR Light Photography will take the shots of players with NTRP 2.0-2.5 and Creative Clicks commercial Photography will take the shots of players with NTRP 3.0-3.5.
3. Players will then choose their best shot among the photos shoot by two photographers.
4. All pictures will be uploaded in two albums in Philippine Tennis League fan page for players with NTRP 2.0-2.5 and 3.0-3.5 respectively.

Toro Hills Championships 2011, "Going Twice"

Everybody is invited to witness the first Philippine Tennis Online tournament this year, the Toro Hills Championships 2011, "Going Twice". The event is organized by John Christian Cogniliaro and Raul Panti Jr, in cooperation with Toro Hills Club, and is presented by Prince and Tobys.

Other sponsors include Apollo Consulting, Global Green Life, KR Light Photography and Big Barks Productions.

The event will be contested in singles and doubles competitions. Singles is divided in two divisions with twenty-four player field, singles with NTRP 2.0-2.5 and 3.0-3.5. On the other hand, doubles is also divided in two divisions with eight-team field, with combined NTRP ratings of 5.0-5.5 and 6.0-6.5.

Spectators and players are welcome to join in Toro Hills tennis courts, Brgy. Toro, Project 8, Quezon City, on January 29-30, 2011.

Na Li to Meet Kim Clijsters in the Women's Final of Australian Open 2011

The women's final of the Australian Open 2011 will be a strong contrast between third seed Kim Clijsters and ninth seed Li Na. Clijsters is the favorite while Li is the underdog. This is Li Na’s first grand slam final and also her first in the Australian Open. On the other hand, this is Kim Clijsters’ eighth grand slam final and her second Australian Open. One thing is common though. Both are bidding to win their first Australian Open title.

Li Na will enter the women's final as a challenger even she had beaten Kim Clijsters in Sydney two weeks ago. Moreover, grand slam finals, is Clijsters territory so her experience will be her great advantage. It's going to be tough to beat her. For Li Na, I hope that she will carry her victory in Sydney to boost her confidence and will fight for every point. She has nothing to lose. With her presence in the final, she made history by becoming the first Chinese, man or woman to be in a grand slam final.

In head to head meetings, Kim Clijsters has the upper hand. They met six times, five times in hard courts and only once in grass. Kim won four, while Na only won twice.

Li Na will possibly try to hit more winners and dictate the rallies while Kim Clijsters will retrieve and keep all the balls back and attack every opportunity. In this match, Kim will win in straight sets and deny Li Na of her first grand slam title.

Venus Williams Survives Another Day!

American Venus Williams made a remarkable comeback and continued her bid to win her eight grandslam in the Australian Open 2011. Remarkable because she had to endure an upset and an injury scare in the first set from unheralded Sandra Zahlavova from Czech Republic.

The first set was very intense, as the challenger Zahlavova absorbed Williams' power with consistent groundies and moved Williams around the court. She matched Williams strokes by strokes, scream by scream. Both players were screaming at the top of their lungs. Unfortunately at set point during the tie break, while williams trailing at 6-7, she hit a difficult backhand volley. And when she landed on the ground, she held her groin and grimaced in pain. Zahlavova went on to win the point and sealed the first set at 7-6 (8-6). Williams called for a medical timeout and she got back to continue the second set with a bandage on her upper thigh.

The second set was a different story. There were less screaming from both players but its all Williams. She showed grit and determination that even she was limping, she went for her serves and shots to dominate Zahlavova and finished the second set at 6-0.

The intensity went back, as Zahlavova went ahead 2-0 in the third set. But Williams even it at 2-2 and then eventually found herself serving at 5-4. Zahlavova did not give up easily though, she saved a match point, thanks to a double fault from Williams. But it wasn't enough.

Williams, ended the match with a strong serve that Zahlavova could not put into play and wrapped up the match with 6-7(8-6), 6-0, 6-4 victory.

Agniezka Radwanska's Racket Flies Off, Literally

It is funny how Agnieszka Radwanska survive her first round match against Kimiko Date-Krumm in the Australian Open 2011, in Melbourne Park. She managed to bounce back and fought courageously in the third set to beat the former world number 2 and finished the match with 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

But it's not her victory that made a headline during her match. Watch this clip below to see what happened.

In happened in the third and final set, while Date-Krumm is serving at 5-6, 40-40. Radwanska racket, flew out of her hand after she hit her backhand leaving her with a handle! It didn't matter though, as she won the match three points later.

Rafael Nadal's Road To Greatness

This year is the best season for Rafael Nadal's young career. He may have won the French Open and Wimbledon back to back, but I believe that winning his first US Open title was the sweetest!

By winning the US Open, where he was top seed, he became the seventh man to complete the career Grand Slam, and the youngest to accomplish the feat in the Open Era at 24 years of age by beating third seed Djokovic 64 57 64 62 in rain-delayed final to win his first title in New York City. He only dropped one set in seven matches en route to the final.Along with these, more milestones were achieved.

He also became the first player to win three straight Grand Slam tournaments in the same season since Rod Laver in 1969. He is the third Spaniard after Santana (1965) and Orantes (1975) to win US Open titles.Is the second player to win Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces at least twice, behind Wilander. Has a 107-1 record in Grand Slam play after winning the first set. "I'm still 24. For me, it's a dream to have the career Grand Slam, but this is more a dream to have the US Open. [It's an] unbelievable feeling because I worked a lot all my life, in all difficult moments to be here, but I never imagined to have the four Grand Slams".

But wait, there's more!! Earlier this year, at the age of 23 years and 11 months, Nadal won a record-breaking 18th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title when he beat Federer 64 76(5) in Madrid final, watched by Queen Sofia of Spain. Nadal became the first player to win all three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay court tournaments in the same year. "Well to be the first player to [win all three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournaments] is unbelievable," said Nadal. "I would never have dreamed that I would be able to do so. I'm very happy to have won here and it is especially important to have won in Madrid"…With 28 tour-level clay-court titles, Nadal moves into a tie for fifth place with Lendl and Nastase in the Open Era clay-court title leaders list...

Ana Ivanovic, Player to Watch in 2011

One of the players to watch next year is the continuation of resurgence of Ana Ivanovic. Ana has been touted as one of the women tennis players who can win multiple slams. Possessed with stunning beauty, she was pictured in numerous magazines. She also has a killer forehand that can rip winners from every side of the court.

Unfortunately, after she won her first grand slam in 2008 Roland Garros, and being seeded number one for the 1st time in her career in Wimbledon (same year), she was demolished by Jie Zheng in the third round. Since then, the collapse in her ranking and form began. She did not win any back-to-back matches in her next five events (Montréal, US Open, Tokyo [Pan Pacific], Beijing and Moscow. She also withdrew in the Olympics because of right thumb injury. But fortunately she rebounded in Zurich by losing to Venus Williams in the semi-finals and won a title in Linz by beating Vera Zvonareva in the Final.

In 2009, she gone out of the top 20 for the first time in five years. But at the latter part of 2010, everything has changed. A different Ana Ivanovic came out at the US Open. A confident and a happy Ana stepped out on the courts of Arthur Ashe Stadium to face a very familiar opponent. It was Jie Zheng, the same player who beat her in Wimbledon 2008. The history didn't matter. Armed with improved serve and positive demeanor, she dominated Jie Zheng and finished the match with 6-3, 6-0 victory. Ana later confessed that she is enjoying her tennis now compared before. Although she lost her match against Kim Clijsters in the fourth round she was happy to match her best showing at the US Open. She also reached fourth round in 2007.

She ended 2010, with two titles, Generali Ladies Linz and Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali and being back at the top 20, ranked 17.

Rafael Nadal, Honored as Manacor's "Favorite Son"

Rafael Nadal is honored in his hometown of Manacor on the island of Majorca by being named as the city's "favorite son". The City Council, headed by Francina Armengol, acknowledges Nadal for his accomplishments most especially this year. The 2010 season is so far the best season for the Spaniard having completed his own "Grand Slam" and the 7th man to achieve the rare feat.

Rafael Nadal is now favorite son of the town of Manacor, the world’s number 1 has been serious during the ceremony, when it is time to speak, was brief but clear, “when we are around the world first thing I think about losing or winning is to return as soon as possible to Manacor, “concluded the Spaniard.

There is always something I love with Australian Open Tennis Championships that I don’t know why. Probably it’s the atmosphere. Probably it’s a beginning of the new season and I always look forward on who will be the next champion.

Looking back in 1997, it is the first Grand Slam I watched on TV. I will never forget how the lowly teenager Martina Hingis beat Mary Pierce in the final.

Since then my passion for the sport has grown and dreamed of learning tennis. I am very lucky that I had the opportunity learn the sport and excelled during college.

Therefore, Australian Open aroused my love for the sport and my passion continues to this day.

I am looking forward to the new year. Will Roger Federer defend his title? Or will Caroline Wozniacki win her first ever grandslam? For now let's look at the teaser for the Australian Open 2011 edition. I can't wait for the new season to start!

Martina Hingis Marrys Show Jumper Thibault Hutin

Former world number 1 and five time grand slam champion Martina Hingis is no longer single. She married French show jumper Thibault Hutin last December 10, 2010 in a private civil ceremony in Paris, according to Swiss newspaper Sonntags Blick.

"Our wedding may take some by surprise, but it has all been planned for some time." the paper quotes the bride as saying of the couple's ceremony.

The ceremony took place at city hall in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine and was followed with a small family reception in the Presidential Suite of Paris's Hotel George V. A traditional Swiss wedding feast will be celebrated next spring.

The couple started their romance when they met at a show-jumping competition in St. Tropez in April, shortly after Martina broke off a long-term engagement to Swiss attorney Andreas Bieri.

The couple will spend their honeymoon in Maldives.

Desirae Krawczyk, New Champ in PCA Open

Desirae Krawczyk, a Fil-Am junior tennis player, has made headlines again in Philippine tennis, this time in PCA Open. She has defeated second seed and last year’s runner up Anna Christine Patrimonio, in a grueling two sets with 7-6 (1), 6-3 victory to capture the women’s crown for the first time.

“It was a good performance. I was really tired in the first set, it was a tough one. I just maintained my status and played hard in the next set,” said Krawczyk who is going back to California but is set to come back to the country in March for the International Junior Tennis Championships next year.

Krawczyk, spoiled a sister’s showdown by beating Patrimonio’s younger sister, Clarice, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the semifinals, admitted she had a hard time beating Patrimonio.

She took home a P50,000 top prize while Anna Christine pocketed P25,000 as a runner-up.

Patrimonio Sisters, An Inch Closer To The Final Duel

Anna Clarice and Anna Christine Patrimonio are moving an inch closer to a possible sisters final showdown as they downed separate rivals in the ladies quarter-finals of the PCA Open 2010 in Paco, Manila, yesterday. The ladies, are daughters of Alvin Patrimonio, a former Philippine Basketball Association MVP.

The younger Anna Clarice, got a sweet revenge against Tamitha Nguyen scoring a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Tamitha has beaten Anna Clarice in the final of Becamex ITF Junior Championships at the Binh Duong Tennis Stadium in Vietnam, last October. Anna Clarice will next face Desirae Krawczyk, who struggled against Maika Jae Tanpoco but eventually prevailed and posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Meanwhile, Anna Christine, came up on fire as she pounded her ground strokes without mercy against Martina Guba with 6-0, 6-0 score. She will next face Marinel Rudas in the other semis.

Pete Sampras, To Receive A Replica of His Davis Cup Trophy

Pete Sampras reported that most of his trophies and other memorabilia were stolen last month from a public storage facility in Los Angeles.

After hearing a report from former world number one, ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti issued a statement regarding the incident.

“We were sorry to learn of the theft of so many of Pete Sampras’ trophies. We know how special a Davis Cup victory is for a player, and if he is unable to recover the loss of his two Davis Cup trophies, we would like to offer him a replica trophy in recognition of his outstanding record in the event.”

This is a nice Christmas gift to Pete. Although memories are better than trophies yet, the latter are a symbol of your victory that can also be cherished as long as you live.

Federer Wins 2010 ATP Championships

There is no doubt that this year is Rafael Nadal's phenomenal season, and this is why I was rooting for him to win the season ending championships. He won the US Open last summer and achieved his career slam. He became the seventh man to achieve the feat along side with Roger Federer and Andre Agassi.

But alas! The maestro Roger Federer, surprised everybody in the tournament. He topped his group in the elimination round by winning all his matches. He came up very strong by dominating Nadal, in the first set of the final. Nadal may have recovered by winning the second set but the maestro cannot be denied. He pulled away in the third set and won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Serena isn't dead, but her social network accounts are! Serena, together with a host of celebrities are raising money for charity by signing off their social networking sites for 24 hours - and playing dead in a series of macabre photographs. The celebrities suffered a “digital death’ for one day and signed off all their social networking accounts to raise cash for the World Aids Day. They logged off and will not sign back on until $1 million has been raised for Alicia Keys' Keep A Child Alive cause.

Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Elijah Wood, and Swizz Beatz were among the celebrities who supported the cause and are all pictured lying flat on their coffins.

ATP has launched an art auction for charity where the top eight players of ATP painted their self portrait by hitting paint covered tennis balls at large art canvases. Each canvas was overlaid with a stenciled image, which, when removed, revealed a unique self-portrait showing one of the player’s signature moves on court.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit charity, with 50% of the proceeds going to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals official tournament charity – Save the Children – and the other 50% going to each player’s chosen charity.

I thought the the player with the highest bid will be contested between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, both has reached the finals with Roger winning the title. But to my surprise, it was Andy Roddick who came on top at the end the auction day.This is a nice consolation for Andy who placed last, in his group.

Understanding THE NTRP Rating System

Recognizing the need for fair play and healthy competition, members of Philippine Tennis Online Forum community has adopted the NTRP rating to determine the levels of competition for all organized tournaments.

Players who are interested to join the tournament must have an NTRP rating inorder to be eligible for the event. After the tournament each player is evaluated to determine if there's a need to increase or decrease their NTRP rating depending on their performance.

National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP)

The National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) is the official system for determining the levels of competition for the USTA League Program. As a competitive, or at least serious, tennis player, you should know where you fall on this rating scale. Why? It will help you find playing partners who more closely match your play level and make for better, more interesting tennis. It also will help you select an appropriate tennis racquet, as most manufactures indicate the NTRP level the racquet is designed for.

PURPOSE

The primary goal of the program is to help all tennis players enjoy the game by providing a method of classifying skill levels for more compatible matches, group lessons, league play, tournaments and other programs.

GUIDELINES

The rating categories are generalizations about skill levels. You may find that you actually play above or below the category that best describes your skill level, depending on your competitive ability. The category you choose is not meant to be permanent, but may be adjusted as your skills change or as your match play demonstrates the need for reclassification. Ultimately your rating is based upon match results.

Players must rate themselves in accordance with the NTRP. When players are rating themselves and they question at which level they should play, they should place themselves in the higher level of play.

It is important that you are honest in evaluating your level of ability. Players who are good athletes and/or intend to spend a great deal of time taking lessons and practicing should be aware that their improvement may be significant enough to surpass their original self-rated level. All players are subject to disqualification from their current level if they are playing at too low an NTRP level and consequently win three championships in one year. Players should aspire to improve their skills by playing against opponents who have similar or better skills than they have and not focus on beating other, less skilled, players. In an effort to avoid disqualification, you should place yourself at the higher level of play.

TO PLACE YOURSELF:

A. Begin with 1.5. Read all categories carefully and then decide which one best describes your present ability level. Be certain that you qualify on all points of all preceding levels as well as those in the level you choose.

B. When rating yourself assume you are playing against a player of the same gender and the same ability.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS PLAYING LEVELS

1.5

This player has limited experience and is still working primarily on getting the ball into play.

2.0

This player needs on-court experience. This player has obvious stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles play.

2.5

This player is learning to judge where the ball is going although court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability.

3.0

This player is fairly consistent when hitting medium paced shorts, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth, or power. Most common doubles formation is one-up, one-back.

3.5

This player has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety. This player exhibits more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage, and is developing teamwork in doubles.

4.0

This player has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving. Rallies may be lost due to impatience. Teamwork in doubles is evident.

4.5

This player has begun to master the use of power and spins and is beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots, and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. This player can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. This player tends to over hit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.

5.0

This player has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured. This player can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys, overhead smashes, and has good depth and spin on most 2nd serves.

5.5

This player has developed power and/or consistency as a major weapon. This player can vary strategies and styles of play in a competitive situation and hits dependable shots in a stress situation.

6.0 to 7.0

The 6.0-player typically has had intensive training for national tournament competition at the junior and collegiate levels and has obtained a sectional and/or national ranking. The 7.0-player is a world class player.

PVTC Organizes A Doubles Tournament

Perpetual Village II Tennis Club invites everybody to join PVTC Doubles Tournament on November 13, 2010. This is a one day event and the tournament is open to all recreational tennis players. The doubles team should have a combined NTRP rating of 7.5 to 8.5.

So far this is the highest NTRP rating doubles competition that PVTC has offered to all Philippine Tennis Online forum community members.

1st Prince Championships, Successful!

The 1st Prince Championships was held on the hard courts of Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat Road Paranaque City last October 2-3, 2010. Tennis players around Metro Manila packed the tennis courts and were excited to be part of the competition.

Joel of Perps Las Pinas, Champion Singles NTRP 4.0-4.5

Singles and Doubles competitions were contested by more than 100 players in four divisions. Singles competitions were grouped in NTRP 3.0-3.5 and NTRP 4.0-4.5 divisions. On the other hand, Doubles competitions were grouped in Max NTRP 6.0 and NTRP 7.5. Singles 3.0-3.5 and 4.0-4.5 were competed in round of 32 while Doubles were competed in round of 16, all in singles elimination format. The elimination rounds were held on the October 2, while the remaining matches up to the finals were held on October 3, the last day of the competition.

Prince, makers of high quality and best tennis rackets, apparels and tennis accessories is the title sponsor of the event. Prince gave away a Tennis bag for each of the Champions of the singles event and Prince Tennis strings for the raffle winners. Dropshots Webstore and Silver Sky Sports were also generous that they sponsored the Tennis balls and gave away Tennis Strings for the Champions, Runners-up and raffle winners as well. In addition, Creative Clicks Commercial Photography is the official photographer of the tournament.

Nanjiru from Perps Las Pinas, Champion Singles NTRP 3.0-3.5

At the end of the tournament, the winners represented various groups from Metro Manila. In singles, for NTRP 3.0-3.5, Nanjiru from Perps Las Pinas emerged as the champion. He beat Dekdek of 56ers Pasig in the finals. Nanjiru won the Champions trophy, a Prince Tennis bag , and a SilverSky Multifilament tennis string. Dekdek on the other hand won the runners-up trophy and a SilverSky Hypergut tennis string. For NTRP 4.0-4.5, Joel also from Perps Las Pinas, was declared as the champion beating Jai of Shotmakers Paranaque. Joel won the Champions trophy, a Prince Tennis bag , and a SilverSky Multifilament tennis string. Jai on the other hand won the runners-up trophy and a SilverSky Hypergut tennis string.

For the Doubles competition, for Max NTRP 6.0, Ricky and Andy defeated Tobirama and Puredrive in the finals. Ricky and Andy were regulars of Olivares Sports Center and each received the Championships trophy and Tecnifibre x-one biphase tennis strings. Tobirama and Puredrive who hails from Toro Hills each received the runners-up trophy and SilverSky Tennis Strings.

For Max NTRP 7.5, Bonns Gerald and Dekdek both from 56ers Club Pasig, were declared as champions after defeating Mark and Edison in the finals. Bonns and Dekdek, each received a Championship trophy and Tecnifibre x-one biphase tennis strings while Mark and Edison, regulars of Pinyahan Tennis Court of Quezon City, received the runners-up trophy and SilverSky Tennis Strings each.

The Prince Championships was organized by Philippine Tennis League.

Clijsters and Nadal, Wins the US Open

Kim Clijsters and Rafael Nadal punctuated the second week of the last grandslam of the year by dominating wins in the US Open finals. Kim Clijsters won her US Open back to back titles against Vera Zvonareva with 6-1, 6-2 victory. Rafael Nadal on the other hand needs to wait another day for his match against Novak Djokovic because of rain. However, when they got back for the match, Nadal simply tore down the Serb with 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win.

With the victory Kim Clijsters won her third US Open, her third grand slam titles overall. She also became the 1^st woman to defend a US Open title in 9 nine years, the same feat that Venus Williams achieved in 2000-2001.

“It’s always an honor to go back to a place, especially a Grand Slam, where you’ve done well and you’ve won, and you want to bring your best tennis again,” Clijsters said. “I know if I bring my best, I’m capable of beating the best players.”

Clijsters took home $2.2 million and an opportunity to share the celebration with Jada again in the awarding ceremony. While, Vera Zvonareva, will continue seeking her maiden grandslam title next year after finishing runner-up in Wimbledon and US Open this year.

Meanwhile in the men’s division, Rafael Nadal rewrites history by winning his 1^st US Open title and completed his career grandslam. He became the 7^th man to achieve a career grandslam joining a list of legends that includes his nemesis Roger Federer, Andrei Agassi, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Don Budge and Fred Perry. Nadal has already five French Open titles, one Australian, two Wimbledon and one US Open title under his belt and he is only 24.

It's a dream to have the career Grand Slam, but this is more dream to have the US Open," Nadal said.

"Is unbelievable feeling because I worked a lot all my life, in all the difficult moments, to be here but I never imagined having the four Grand Slams.

"This one is very special to me because it was the last one remaining."

Experts are predicting that he can win more slams than Federer and can be considered as the best tennis player of all time.

The 1st Philippine Tennis League Championships

Philippines Tennis League invites all tennis enthusiasts, fans and recreational players to participate in the first Philippine Tennis League Championships slated on October 2-3, 2010, in the hard courts of Olivarez Tennis Courts in Sucat Road, Paranaque City.

This event is the biggest tournament in PhilippineTennisOnline.com/forum community targeting 128 players in total. The players will compete in singles and doubles events in four divisions or levels. The singles crown will be contested in two divisions. Players with NTRP 4.0-4.5 and NTRP 3.0-3.5. Doubles on the other hand will feature doubles team with a max combination of NTRP 7.5 and NTRP 5.5.

The author is also the organizer of this event and hopes to establish a regular season for the community. He hopes and dreams to put up a local version of ATP and WTA tour where players earns prize money in every event they enter and build their career. He considers Billy-Jean King as his inspiration. The same woman who found World Team Tennis.

US Open's Best Match Point Ever?

The second week of the US Open will be about to close this weekend. The women's final will be decided between last year's champion Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva. Rafael Nadal booked his spot in the men's finals after defeating Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

But if there's one unforgettable match point in this year's US Open has offered that would be in the match between Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer in fourth round. What's more amazing is, Ferrer was leading by two sets, but Verdasco managed to come back and extend the match to a 5th set decider. Verdasco has to trail 1-4 in the fifth set tiebreaker as well but managed to pull a huge win to reach his 1st US Open quarterfinal.

Thanks to this unbelievable match point! Watch the video below.

Ferrer got nothing to do but look at the ball bouncing through the baseline for a winner.

Let the Final Begin, It’s Kim Clijsters Versus Vera Zvonareva!

The final spots for women’s US Open were completed. Vera Zvonareva upset top seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3, while Kim Clijsters defeated Venus Williams 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

A rematch from last year’s final looks to repeat as Caroline beat all her opponents in straight sets as she sailed through the semifinals. But Vera aiming to advance in her first US Open semifinals was steadier all throughout and never let the Dane execute her game. In the first set she quickly went ahead 3-1, as the Dane kept piling her errors, getting more frustrated. Vera then closed the set after making two easy volleys at the net.

"It was tough as Caroline was in the final last year and she is a great player, but I was patient and aggressive like in my previous matches," Zvonareva said."It was a great experience at Wimbledon but it's something that is in the past and I am trying to look forward." she added.

The second set was even more straightforward for Zvonareva. She may have encountered an equipment malfunction with broken racquet strings, but it never caused her any trouble as she served out the match, concluding it when Wozniacki hit long with an errant forehand.

Wozniacki was humbled as she paid tribute to Zvonareva for ending her 13-match winning streak.

"She was not missing and going for her shots and most were going in," she said.
"I had chances and I made some mistakes that I usually don't do. It was a tough day for me at the office and it had to be today. "I just need to learn from this, I can look back on this tournament and be proud with what I have achieved."

The other semifinals featured two former US Open Champions, American Venus Williams who won 2000-01 and Belgian Kim Clijsters in 2005 and 2009. Venus Williams is bidding to become the oldest grand slam winner in two decades while Kim is bidding to win back to back titles, a feat that Venus achieved in 2000-2001.

Two women started very well holding each other’s serve. But Williams took advantage of her break point opportunity, and manage to get an early lead. Thanks to successful net approaches and solid ground strokes, putting the Belgian on the defensive. Clijsters even attempted to hit a backhand drop shot and lob combination only for Williams to smash in the open court and end the first set 6-4.

The tempo of the match was changed when Clijsters made a key adjustment to her game plan. She played closer to the baseline, tightened up her backswing and pushed Wiliams around more. She move away, and lead at 5-2 but Venus refused to let go. She levelled it to 5-5 as she blasted strong service games and ripped solid returns. But Clijsters hold her serve to go up again at 6-5. Venus then forced the tie-breaker after she held own serve. Unfortunately, unforced errors proved too costly for Venus, Kim dominated again in the tie-breaker and ended the second set 7-2 after Williams’ overhead smash went out. Williams tried the inevitable by challenging the call, but Clijsters went to the player’s seat right before the replay was finished. The call was indeed out and ended the second set.

The third set was fairly even but a crucial break point decided the fate of the two former champions. While Williams serving at 4-4, 30-all, she double faulted giving Clijsters the break point. Then, Clijsters hit a backhand lob over Williams for a winner and went ahead at 5-4. Then Clijsters served it out to finish the match at 6-4.

The win extended Clijsters’ US Open winning streak to 20 matches putting her second place in the all time list.

“This is what you try to achieve,” said Clijsters, also the 2005 U.S. Open champion. “I never expected I’d come back in this position. I was trying to do it. It wasn’t easy, but I stuck with it.”

The finals on Saturday will be a rematch between Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva. They meet last July in Wimbledon where Vera upset Kim in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

No Fairy Tale Ending for this Year’s Cinderella

Maria Sharapova became sort of like the Cinderella’s evil step mom as she mercilessly crushed Beatrice Capra’s dream of reaching the fourth round in the US Open. Sharapova ended the teenager’s amazing run in a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0 demolition.

Capra may have lost, but this should be a great experience for her. She has beaten veteran Karolina Sprem and upset 18th seed Aravene Rezai in the previous rounds. But today is not her day. The teen struggled with wind as she tried to keep all the balls back to stay on the rallies. She occasional hit some winners but it wasn’t enough to chip Sharapova’s onslaught of ground strokes.

Sharapova’s power is unstoppable. Showing no mercy as she aggressively moves the teen around. She managed to break her opponent’s serve 6 times in 10 attempts and produced 17 winners compared to Capra’s 3.

Sharapova will next face Caroline Wozniacki, who is equally impressive beating Yung-Jan Chan 6-1, 6-0.

Jankovic Did Not Survive on Kanepi's Challenge

Kaia Kanepi reached the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career after a 6-2, 7-6 (1) upset over 4th seeded Jelena Jankovic. Kanepi, who reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon earlier this year,overcame a patchy second set, in which she lost her serve twice in a row, to eliminate Jankovic 6-2, 7-6 (1) in one hour and 48 minutes.

During the first set, everything did not work to Jankovic's way. The wind is blowing fast and so are her errors. She struggled most of the time on her serve. She even paused several times during her service motion. At the end of first set she only managed to hold serve once and win only 46% of her first serve points. Not to mention that Kanepi dominated most of the rallies keeping Jankovic out balanced and force to commit mistakes.

"You toss the ball, and it was all over the place," Jankovic said. "And then you hit the ball one direction, it goes another. You're just getting ready to hit the ball and just moves away from you. So it was really hard out there."

She may have some excuse but she did not fail to recognize her opponent's solid performance: "The wind was really strong, and she handled these kind of conditions a lot better than I did ... She was the better player today. Congrats to her."

The second set was tighter as both girls were tentative to hit their shots. Kanepi managed to hold her serve and lead 2-1 only to see Jankovic level the set at 3-3. Jankovic tried to to move Kanepi around but the Estonian chased every ball and hit winners at most important points leaving Jankovic wondering what to do. There was a time that Jankovic moved forward but her attempt failed as her volley was caught by the net.
At 4-3, Kanepi serving at 15-15, Jankovic was in trouble when Kanepi hit and an angled crosscourt forehand that left her scrambling on the side and set up a forehand winner. Although Kanepi followed it up with an error but a beautiful serve and backhand winner down the line finished the game to lead at 5-3.

Jankovic refused to give up. Jankovic kept fighting, stepping in on Kanepi's second serve with a backhand winner down the line to trail at 4-5 and hold her serve to go back into the match at 5-5. She broke Kanepi again to lead 6-5. But Kanepi held herself together, thanks to Jankovic’s three errors and forced a tie-breaker.

The tie-break signaled the end of Jankovic’s campaign as Kanepi dominates and end it with 7-1 victory.

The first set was tight as both of the players broke each other's serve. Virginie has a chance of closing the set with 5-4, 30-0 lead on Ana's serve but through the cheers of the crowd, Ana battled back to level the match at 5-5 and came away with 7-5 first set victory.

"The support helped so much," said Ivanovic. "I feel like I am at home here."

The second set was a different story. As Ivanovic's confidence grows, her forehands found a way to hit winners from side to side. Razanno demoralized, tried to compete from the baseline but the crowd and Ivanovic's conviction prove too strong. The second set ended in only 21 minutes.

Petra Kvitova, who reached the fourth round last year started very strong against Clijsters. She confidently unleashed her ground strokes producing winners after winners and broke Clijsters twice to jump to a 3-0 lead. For one moment, she looked to continue her amazing run she started last year.

However, as Clijsters settled down, tried to minimize her errors and captured six straight games to win the first set 6-3. And from there she never looked back. Clijsters reeled off a dozen games in a row and turning the debut of Kvitova on Ashe -- which had begun so promisingly -- into a forgettable blip, 6-3, 6-0.

Prior to the US Open Kvitova, a lefty from Czech Republic also reached the Semi-finals of Wimbledon this year, despite never having previously played a match on grass.

"My serve has been causing me some problems in the last few weeks but, once I came back from 3-0 down, I was able to be more aggressive," Clijsters said during an on-court interview.

With a win Clijsters is gifted with a potential mouth watering encounter with Ana Ivanovic who recently discovered her winning form that lead her to win her lone grand slam crown, the French Open.

Dementieva Survives As Hantuchova’s Game Collapses

Switching momentum was featured in the match between 12^th seed Elena Dementieva of Russia and 24^th seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.

Dementieva got an early lead in the first as she breaks Hantuchova in the opening game and holding at love to take a 2-0 lead. However, Hantuchova turned the match around in the next game. She kept on hitting the same devastating forehands that made her beat former number one Dinara Safina in the first round. Also, thanks to shaky service games from Dementieva, she managed to score back to back breaks and lead 5-2 and had three break opportunities to close the set.
But another swing of momentum occurred. Dementieva saved all three break points and hold her serve to trail at 5-3. She then broke Hantuchova in the next game, thanks to two double faults and held her own serve to get even at 5-5. Having all the momentum, Dementieva dominated the rallies as Hantuchova's game collapses and went on to win the match 7-5, 6-2.

"I did not want to lose that first set," said Dementieva. "I was just trying to fight for every point and that was the key for the match. After that I felt so much more confident in the second set and played a more aggressive game."

Elena Dementieva will face Sam Stosur in the next round who managed to beat Sara Errani of Italy 6-2, 6-3.

Number 1 seed and world number two Caroline Wozniacki was never challenged by Chang Kai-Chen from Taiwan. She gifted her a double bagle, 6-0, 6-0 in 47 minutes demolition and moves swiftly into the third round.

The Dane hopes for a return trip to the final, and seeks her 1st major career title.

This is also the first time that Wozniacki was seeded number 1 in a Grand Slam and was very confident throughout the match. She controls most of the points and moves her opponent around forcing Chang to commit errors. The Dane ended the match winning 52 points to 24 for her opponent and has lost only two games in her first two matches at Flushing Meadows.

Wozniacki is also the winner of this year’s US Open Series with wins in Montreal and New Haven, will pocket a bonus of 1 million dollars if she wins the Open, the same feat that Kim Clijsters has achieve last 2005.

I was thinking the other day on who will be this year's Cinderella after Melanie Oudin's amazing quarterfinal run last year. While watching Simona Halep's match against the fourth seeded Jelena Jankovic, I thought she could be the next endearing star. Unfortunately, Jankovic used her experience, battled back from 4-5 down in the third set and eventually won the match 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. She just denied the teenager a victory in her US Open debut.

Today, an unknown American teenager Beatrice Capra, ranked 371 in the world emerges in her carriage. Smiling and autographing giant tennis balls at the end of a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 upset over the 18^th seed Aravane Rezai and moves into the third round of the US Open. She continues her dream run at a grandslam and becomes the lowest-ranked player to advance to the third round since 2002.

On paper, with Rezai's superior resume and ferocious ground strokes, this should be another lopsided battle in favor of the French woman. However, Capra has a different plan in mind. Fueled by her tenacity, she retrieved every ball she can and waited for Rezai to commit errors and eventually won the first set 7-5. Although Rezai managed to bounce back by winning the second set, 6-2, it was Capra who was more consistent in the end. Three bad errors from Rezai's racket gifted the teenager a stunning 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory.

"I'd have to say that was probably one of the best moments of my life," said Capra. "This whole experience has been unreal, and I'm so happy."

The next foe for Capra in the third round is the winner between Maria Sharapova and Iveta Benesova.

For the first time in 11 years Mirjana Lucic won a main-draw US Open match beating Alicia Molik of Australia 7-6 (5), 6-1.

The 28-year-old Lucic was ranked as high as 32nd in 1998, but she left the tour for several years and hadn't played in the U.S. Open since a first-round loss in 2002. She is currently ranked 150th and had to go through qualifying to make it into this year's tournament.

Lucic was an up-and-coming star in the '90s, winning her first tournament as a pro at age 15, in Bol, Croatia. . She also teamed with Martina Hingis to win the 1998 Australian Open women's doubles title and also reached Wimbledon semifinals in 1999, losing to Steffi Graf. However, family issues and money problems forced her out of the game and she is now on the comeback.

"My dream never died and never went away," she said. "I was just waiting for an opportunity."

Waiting for Mirjana in the next round is Jelena Jankovic, who defeated teenager Simona Halep 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

The Birth of Philippine Tennis League

As a fan, and a tennis player I always dream of joining tennis tournaments. I imagine myself being one of the players representing our country and compete in international tennis tournaments and winning some of them. But in reality, given with age and resources, it is impossible. Fortunately, a stranger I met in Mc Donalds, two years ago introduced me to PinoyTennisOnline.com/forum. That stranger became one of my best friends and became my regular tennis buddy.

PTO or PinoyTennisOnline.com/forum is a forum consists of more than 1800 Filipino tennis enthusiasts, trainers, fans and recreational players all over the country. Although there are tournaments held occasionally by some members in different clubs, there is no governing body that organizes a regular series of tournaments for all forum members. This is the reason why Philippine Tennis League was born. It aims to provide an opportunity for all non-professional and club members of the forum to enhance and showcase their skills and talents in tennis.

My hope that through these tennis tournaments more fans and enthusiasts will be converted to players and more players will be inspired to improve their skills, and together we will make our tennis dreams into a reality.
